The 60-Second Countdown & Stage Questions
When a speller steps to the microphone, the chief pronouncer articulates the word clearly. The speller is allotted exactly 60 seconds to complete their spelling.
Allowed Inquiries
Within their 60 seconds, spellers may request: definition, language of origin, part of speech, use in a sentence, and alternative pronunciations.
Irrevocable Letters
Once a letter is uttered aloud at the microphone, it cannot be changed or retraced. Spellers may re-pronounce the word, but the letter sequence cannot be altered.
Pronounce – Spell – Pronounce
Proper stage etiquette requires the speller to pronounce the word, spell it letter by letter, and conclude by pronouncing the word again to signal completion.
African Loanwords & Orthographic Heritage
One of the distinguishing features of the African Spelling Bee is the inclusion of words of indigenous African origin that have entered the English lexicon. Spellers study the distinct phonetic adaptations of words derived from Bantu, Niger-Congo, Afro-Asiatic, and Khoisan languages.
